What is a Changing Place Toilet

A Changing Places Toilet is an accessible sanitary facility with a toilet, hoist, washbasin, adult-sized changing bench and optional shower with adequate space for use by persons with a range of disabilities who may require assistance.

Changing Places toilets offer larger sanitary facilities that address the needs of people with complex care needs and support them to take part in everyday activities such as family day outings, shopping, attending a concert or sporting event.

The design and installation of a Changing Places Toilet should meet the minimum requirements of the Building Regulations click https://www.gov.ie/pdf/?file=https://assets.gov.ie/241161/31b7614c-7df1-439c-abcb-0f16fb3e93a7.pdf#page=null for further information and advice.

Peninsular Toilet

A peninsular toilet layout should be provided with clear circulation space around the toilet. Space on either side of the toilet provides space for Personal Assistants/Carers to assist on both sides of the toilet. Wall mounted drop-down support rails and vertical grab rails should be provided on both sides of the toilet to support while seated and transitioning.

Wash Basin

To cater for both standing and seated users a height adjustable wash basin should be provided. Vertical grab rails should be provided to support and allow a person to stabilise themselves at the wash basin.

Height Adjustable Adult Sized Bench

The minimum provisions of TGD M 2022 require a wall-mounted adult-sized, height adjustable changing bench with clear unobstructed circulation space in front of the changing bench. An adult sized height adjustable bench allows carers to assist a person with changing and undressing to use the toilet. A continuous charging full ceiling coverage hoist system should be provided to support the user to move freely around the room with comfort and dignity.

Space

The minimum overall dimensions of the Changing Places Toilet should be 4200mm by 3000mm to accommodate a wheelchair user and multiple carers. The floor surface should be non-slip with plenty of space for a privacy screen and waste bins.
